Honoring King’s Vision of Economic Justice

Last Friday, January 17, 2025, we gathered for a special hybrid Friday Community Call to launch the 2025 Disrupting Poverty Summit, themed Power to the Poor – Living the Legacy of King’s Poor People’s Campaign. Held both in person at BREC Howell Park in Baton Rouge and online, the event brought together community members, leaders, and changemakers to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for economic justice. The morning was filled with powerful discussions and activities designed to inspire action and explore tangible ways to address systemic poverty in Baton Rouge and beyond.

Inspiring Discussions and Action

The event featured engaging talks from guest speakers, including Eugene Collins, Sateria Tate, and Danielle Brown, who reflected on the continued relevance of King’s Poor People’s Campaign and its call for racial and economic equity. Participants shared in an inspiring dialogue about how to reimagine solutions for systemic challenges while being equipped with resources for action. Interactive activities encouraged attendees to discover their roles in disrupting poverty, fostering a sense of personal responsibility and collective purpose.

Building Connections for Change

For those who attended in person, the event also offered an opportunity to connect with others during a networking lunch, building relationships and partnerships to further the mission of economic justice. Whether in-person or online, participants left with a renewed commitment to continuing Dr. King’s legacy by working together to create a more equitable future. This kickoff marks the beginning of what promises to be an impactful summit, and we look forward to building on this momentum throughout the year.
